Rep. Kristian Grant, from the 82nd District, offered the following invocation:
“Heavenly Father the Bible teaches that You prioritize prayer for all who have the responsibility to govern; we humbly bow before You today to pray over this session. Lord there are many issues facing our Great state of Michigan, help us to bear the responsibility of the citizens of this state with honor, integrity and dignity. Deliver this body from pride, arrogance and obstinacy, that we may we be united against our common enemies of oppression, poverty, and lawlessness. Teach us to put aside politics in order to pursue avenues of truth, justice and equity. Grant us wisdom and discernment to faithfully fulfill the duties entrusted to us. Lord, guide us today as we defend the liberty of our constituents. Our prayer is that You empower us to walk in Your light, to serve in Your strength, to reason with Your understanding, and to speak with Your compassion.
We pray that the peace of Your divine presence is a constant reminder of our prayer and an encouragement to remain steadfast as a fiduciary of the people of Michigan, today and forever more. Amen!”

Motions and Resolutions
The Speaker laid before the House
House Resolution No. 95.
A resolution to declare May 2023 as Foster Care Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
(The resolution was introduced and postponed for the day on May 2, see House Journal No. 38, p. 524.)
The question being on the adoption of the resolution,
Rep. Aiyash moved that consideration of the resolution be postponed temporarily.
The motion prevailed.
By unanimous consent the House considered House Resolution No. 103 out of numerical order.
House Resolution No. 103.
A resolution to declare May 2023 as Mental Health Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, The month of May is observed every year as Mental Health Awareness Month across the United States to educate communities about mental illnesses and reduce the stigma that surrounds them; and
Whereas, Mental health is essential to everyone’s overall health and well‐being; and
Whereas, All Americans face challenges in life that can impact their mental health; and
Whereas, The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that over 1.3 million Michiganders have a mental health condition; and
Whereas, Prevention is an effective way to reduce the burden of mental health conditions; and
Whereas, There are practical tools that
all people can use to improve their mental health and increase resiliency; and
Whereas, With effective treatment, those individuals with mental health conditions can recover and lead full, productive lives; and
Whereas, By ignoring the illnesses of our fellow citizens, it will only further stigmatize those who suffer from a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder; and
Whereas, Each business, school, government agency, health care provider, organization, and citizen share the burden of mental health problems and has a responsibility to promote mental wellness and support prevention and treatment efforts; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 2023 as Mental Health Awareness Month in the state of Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That we call upon all citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, and schools to commit to increasing the awareness and understanding of mental health, the steps we can take to protect mental health, and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental health conditions.
The question being on the adoption of the resolution,
The resolution was adopted.
The House returned to the consideration of
House Resolution No. 95.
A resolution to declare May 2023 as Foster Care Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.

House Resolution No. 102.
A resolution to declare May 2023 as Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Huntington’s disease is a progressive degenerative neurological disease affecting 41,000 Americans while another 200,000 are genetically at risk of inheriting the expanded gene responsible for causing the disease; and
Whereas, Each child of a parent with Huntington’s disease has a 50 percent chance of inheriting the Huntington’s disease gene; and
Whereas, Huntington’s disease typically occurs in mid-life, between the ages of 30 and 50, though onset has been known to occur in children as young as 2 years of age; and
Whereas, The average lifespan after onset of Huntington’s disease is 10-20 years. The younger the age of onset, the more rapid the progression of the disease, resulting in children who develop the juvenile form of the disease rarely living to adulthood; and
Whereas, Since the discovery of the gene that causes Huntington’s disease in 1993, the pace of HD research has accelerated. Scientists across the nation are conducting important research into Huntington’s Disease, which at present has no effective treatment or cure; and
Whereas, It is critical to the success of research and support services to raise awareness in the general public and the medical community about Huntington’s disease; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 2023 as Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month in the state of Michigan. We encourage all citizens to join in the observance.
