“On Sunday, Christians all over the world marked the day of Pentecost—a day often designated as the ‘birthday’ of the Christian church. But scholars also agree that what happened on Pentecost was an event undoing the hubris, the division, and the distance from God that occurred long before that at the Tower of Babel. From Pentecost, we see that there is a thread of commonality, a recognition among all people of understanding, a power of unity in our relationships.
In that spirit of the uniting God, let us join our hearts in an attitude of quiet and prayer.
Holy One, Creating God, Restoring God, God of Love—You are known to us by many names. Open our hearts today to Your powerful and unifying love. Clear our eyes, temper our voices, give us a wide and generous vision of Your world.
We give You thanks for this day and for all that it holds; for the privilege of serving this State; for all that sustains our lives of service.
We pray today that our hearts and actions might move along that Pentecost thread and reflect a commitment to justice, an abundance of graciousness to those with whom we may disagree, and a hopeful future.
In the work of governance before this body, may their actions be guided by principles of democracy and equity, surprising joy, and uncommon courtesy.
Help each one to find that thread of common purpose in leadership for the citizens of this state, a purpose of responsibility and privilege, responsive to those who elect and entrust this body to do the work of the people.
We pray for the well-being and protection of our leaders—our Governor, those who serve in our courts, the senators and representatives, our service members and veterans, and all who choose a life of public service. May each one seek to see and understand one another.
Spirit God, Your threads of compassion weave together a fabric of provision. Watch over the vulnerable ones; those who find themselves hungry, without adequate housing, the ones living among people who threaten them, anyone who suffers from emotional or mental illness, and our friends and family members who are sick.
Long ago, Your powerful spirit allowed a thread of Pentecost understanding to move among people of great differences, from different cultures, speaking different languages. That thread bound hearts and lives together and, even in the midst of noise and confusion fostered understanding among people.
Fill us with that same spirit of love and clarity as we serve the people of this great state.
Amen.”

Rep. Aiyash moved that Rep. Bierlein be excused from today’s session.
The motion prevailed.

House Resolution No. 264.
A resolution to declare May 2024 as Brain Tumor Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Brain tumors, specifically glioblastoma, have become recognized in recent years as one of the deadliest cancers; and
Whereas, There are an estimated 770 new diagnoses of brain tumors in Michigan in 2024 and an estimated 620 Michigan residents will die from a brain tumor in 2024. Brain tumors can be deadly and can severely impact the quality of life of those fortunate enough to survive this disease. Brain cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer deaths among children and young adults; and
Whereas, Brain tumors have the highest per-patient initial cost of care for any cancer group with an annualized mean net cost of care in 2019 US dollars approaching $162,550; and
Whereas, More than any other cancer, brain tumors can have lasting and life-altering physical, cognitive, and psychological impacts on a patient’s life; and
Whereas, The state of Michigan has attained national recognition as a leading center of excellence in the field of brain tumor treatment and research as a result of the number of patients traveling to Michigan for clinical trial participation, grant dollars locally used to create jobs, and professionals specializing in brain tumors across the state; and
Whereas, Detroit is proud to be home to high level brain cancer centers such as the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center at Henry Ford Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Michigan and others. We encourage Detroit residents to continue to be vigilant and proactive when it comes to their healthcare; and
Whereas, Despite the numbers of brain
tumors diagnosed annually, and their devastating prognosis, there have only
been five FDA-approved drugs and one device to treat brain tumors in the past
thirty years, none of these have extended survival more than two years on
average or are considered curative; and
Whereas, To date, there have been no drugs developed and approved specifically for malignant pediatric brain tumors. Mortality rates for brain tumors have apparently remained relatively unchanged over the past 30 years; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 2024 as Brain Tumor Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
The question being on the adoption of the resolution,
The resolution was adopted.
