Pastor Ben Stout, Next Gen Pastor of Lakeview Community Church in Lakeview, offered the following invocation:

“Heavenly Father,

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we come to You today, 2,000 years after the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy that the captives would be set free, the oppressed would find liberty, and the good news would reach the poor.

Father, we thank You for this room filled with leadership. You have carved each life, experience, and background for this moment. Use them, Father. May they seek Your wisdom and be Your hands and feet as they work to care for the people of Michigan.

This is a challenging task. Our nation is divided in many ways, and we ask for Your healing touch. I am grateful in my hometown of Lakeview to have brothers and sisters in Christ, both Republican and Democrat. I love them all, even as we sometimes disagree. May this house be a place of steadfast peace where cool heads prevail and Your light shines brightly. Let these leaders be ambassadors of the Providence You wish to pour out on Michigan this year.

Lord, for those who recognize Your authority through Jesus Christ, grant them power, clarity, and love that honor the gospel. For those who have not yet fully encountered You, continue to pour out Your love, mercy, and encouragement upon them and their families. May all experience the joy of Your presence.

Your mercies are great, Father. May these leaders pursue protection from corruption and embody the words of the prophet Micah:

‘He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?’ (Micah 6:8, ESV).

May this house set an example for other states and the federal government of what collaboration looks like. Let them fight against hunger, poverty, and the mental health crisis with laws that are just, loving, and merciful. May Michigan walk humbly with You, our God.

In Jesus’s name, Amen.”
