Chaplain Yolanda Stinson, Chaplain of the Detroit Police Department in Detroit, offered the following invocation:

“Eternal God, our Father, we thank You. For this is the day which You have made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Thank You for another day and another opportunity to gather and be a part of what You have chosen each of us to do. Thank You for keeping us, watching over us, protecting us and giving us grace, mercy, wisdom, and favor during this 2024 year. Here we are at the final days of this year and we are grateful for the things that were accomplished. We haven’t solved every problem yet, but we are thankful that we are still in the position to be able to work together with this body of legislators and colleagues to help make a difference on this side of democracy.

As we prepare to wrap up this year, help us to see and hear clearer than we ever have before. Help us to see that together we’re better; together we’re stronger. Help us to see that if we divide ourselves into groups which fight each other, eventually we will fall apart. God, let Your Kingdom come, let Your will be done, as it is in heaven, so let it be in the earth. Make us one. Please guide us with wisdom, grace, confidence, courage, and respect to complete the tasks at hand. Bless our Governor, our Speaker of the House, all our Representatives, all of our elected and appointed officials, our individual cities and districts; bless the state of Michigan and please God, bless these United States of America. In Jesus’s name, I pray with respect to every other faith represented here. Amen.”
